为什么游戏大佬Valve要推出自己的VR头显？

Valve（V社）最终还是在5月份开放了Valve Index VR头显的预购。其实早在3月底，Valve就在官网公布了Valve Index头显的即将到来。而目前预购用户在拿到头显前可能还要等上一个月的时间。

事实上，外媒Road To VR已经提前体验了这款设备。对我们来说，升级是意料之中的事，而我们更想知道的则是为什么Valve一改其策略，依靠自身推出了这款VR头显。

要说清楚整件事，我们可能不得不回到Valve此前的策略上去。其实在Valve携手HTC以前还有小插曲。Facebook插手Oculus，让Valve不得不重新寻找在VR领域的合作伙伴，而HTC此时也正致力于转型，两者最终走到了一起。HTC在宣传中也一直表示，“完整的Vive系统基于SteamVR”，而HTC Vive最终在2016年2月29日正式开启预购。

说是合作，但两者其实都有自己的打算和想法。而双方关系的裂痕也早就埋在了双方未来的发展与定位的不同上。HTC在这个过程中，充当的是设备生产制造商以及设备销售商，但是设备核心尤其是Lighthouse定位基站相关技术却是牢牢地掌握在Valve手中。而HTC显然也不单单满足于设备制造商这一定位。关系的破裂一触即发。

最终，在2016年8月。几乎是前后脚的，HTC宣布了Viveport内容平台的出现，而Valve则是将Lighthouse光学追踪定位技术授权给了第三方。显然，HTC作为合作的模板意味着这一角色也可以是其他任意第三方，Valve想要的并不单单只是一个硬件厂商，而是更多的SteamVR平台内容的销量，但是HTC早期799美元的Vive定价并未能让硬件得到快速地推广与普及。

HTC也在尝试着摆脱SteamVR平台，通过构建属于自己的Viveport内容平台，逐步覆盖受众，进而构建出完整的生态。后期的Viveport M移动VR内容平台也是基于此目标的构建。

但是即便是第三方诸如LG（采用Valve的光学追踪定位技术）的介入，也并没有让硬件得到更为迅速地推广。竞争对手Facebook构建起的Oculus内容平台也仍旧存在。甚至在晚些时间，微软Windows MR头显的出现，对于Valve来说也很难说清楚到底是好事还是坏事：一方面售价299美元起的Windows MR头显的出现，让硬件得到了更大范围的普及；另一方面，微软是否会借此构建出一个新的内容平台也让人心生疑窦。行业显然会说，C端消费者市场还未兴起。

依靠第三方硬件的推广并没有带来SteamVR内容平台内容销量的增长。对于Valve来说或许是个急需解决的问题。但是所有人能做的似乎只是像扎个伯格所指出的那样等待十到十五年。但是这个过程中，技术需要迭代，不可能停步不前。而Valve Index VR头显或许可以试做一种尝试，或者一种讯息：告知人们对VR的探索并未结束。

Valve有意将自己作为一个新的样本，或者说这是Valve打破目前僵局的一种尝试。在互联网进入到从生态内容平台获利的时刻中，Valve试图将欠缺的硬件补足，建立起完整地生态。对于拥有Lighthouse光学定位追踪技术的Valve来说，做硬件本身就是水到渠成的一件事。当然，这款硬件到底如何仍旧值得评估，但毫无疑问，Valve的SteamVR平台无论从何种意义上来说都将比以往更具竞争力。

事实上，Valve的VR团队明确表示VR还有三个可以有所改进的点，包括易用性、价格以及VR保真度。Valve认为自己最适合的是解决保真度的问题，而其他问题则留给了其他友商。所以目前其实我们还是很难确定Valve是想改变自己的模式进而成为唯一的拥有Lighthouse定位技术的厂商，还是将继续保持目前的状态，我们唯一可以确定的是：这对于SteamVR平台来说，并没有坏处。

此外，在人人都声称要不忘初心的年代，Valve当然同样如此。作为游戏大佬，V社早就表示在研发3款完整的VR游戏内容，恰好，其中至少有一款将在今年与用户见面。甚至这款大作，刚好又十分符合SteamVR平台的调性，兼容其他头显。至于这意味着什么，或许VR玩家马上就会知晓。
